Vintage ou rétro : quelle est la vraie différence ?

Vintage or retro: what is the real difference?

We often hear both terms, sometimes mistakenly used as synonyms. However, vintage and retro are not the same thing.
So how do we differentiate between them? And above all, why does this matter when choosing clothes or objects?

1. Vintage is authentic.

  • The word comes from the world of wine (a “good year” = vintage ).
  • In fashion, a garment is said to be vintage if it actually dates from another era, at least 20 years old .
  • These are therefore original pieces , produced at the time: 60s, 70s, 80s, etc.
  • At Mes Épaulettes, you can find, for example, real 80s jackets, sometimes deadstock , never worn, but definitely vintage.

Example: a real cotton dress from the 1950s

2. Retro is the inspiration

  • Retro style is visually inspired by the past… but it’s made today .
  • A modern brand can create a “50s” dress or a “vintage look” t-shirt, without it actually being old.
  • It's a style , an aesthetic, but not an antique piece.

Example: a retro dress inspired by 1950s cocktail dresses

3. 🤔 Why does this matter?

  • Vintage is about the circular economy , sustainability , and a direct link with history .
  • Retro is often just disguised fast fashion (but not always).
  • By buying vintage, you make a truly ethical, unique choice, and you wear a piece that has a history .

4. At Mes Épaulettes, it's all about real vintage

All the pieces offered are authentic , carefully selected, and often come from dormant stocks or forgotten wardrobes.
We don't reproduce the old, we give it new life.

🧵 Conclusion

Now that you know the difference, you might see your clothes differently.
Vintage has a soul, a history, and a charm that no replica can imitate.
And you, are you more into vintage or retro?
